Low Modulus Strain Gages for Stress Analysis of Balloon Structures

An exploratory study has shown that instrumentation can be developed to permit experimental stress analysis of scientific balloons. Special strain gages have been made and applied to polyethylene balloon films, providing measures of strain up to 50% at +25 and -80��C. Gages were made of silver or aluminum deposited chemically or by vacuum metalizing onto plastic films. Feasibility of low modulus strain gages for this application has now been demonstrated, and optimization of materials, processes and instrumentation is anticipated as the next phase of the development.
