Impact Toughness of Balloon Films

To increase the reliability and extend the capabilities of scientific ballooning, polyethylene balloon films were measured for impact toughness at +23 and -80C, using equipment developed for measuring the energy absorbed by or upon diaphragm fracture. The films had great toughness at the warmer temperature and brittle fractures at the lower temperature absorbed less energy than ductile failures of the same materials.
