Spatial Coherence Retrievals of Cloud Properties for the Fire Marine Stratocumulus IFO, June 29-July 19, 1987

Abstract

The purpose of this note is to provide "quick look" satellite retrievals of cloud properties for the FIRE Marine Stratus IFO, June 29- July 19, 1987. It is hoped that this quick look data will be compared with other IFO observations and that the comparisons will prompt further investigations which will ultimately lead to refined models of marine stratocumulus. Included in this note are 1) multispectral satellite images of AVHRR data from selected NOAA-9 and NOAA-10 overpasses, 2) maps showing the domain of the images, 3) cloud and surface properties retrieved using the spatial coherence method. The note describes the calibration and navigation of the data. In addition, it identifies special cases in which the clouds appear to become reasonable approximations to a plane-parallel cloud system.
