Stratospheric Circulation Statistics

Abstract

This report which contains tables and diagrams are presented which describe the monthly mean statistics of the circulation in the Northern Hemisphere stratosphere from July 1976 through April 1980 as revealed by NMC operational analyses. Results for the zonal mean temperature, geostrophic zonal wind and the eddy heat and momentum transports associated with the geostrophic wind are included. ATechnical Note presents a selection of the resulting statistics. Section 3 includes results for the four year mean (three year mean for May and June) climatology of zonal-mean temperatures, geostrophic winds, and eddy heat and momentum transports. Section 4 presents the statistics for individual years with a concentration on the months of December and January (when the interannual variability is largest).
